    Summary

John explains that in the first session you should bring the following things:

    • A picture ID
    • Your insurance card (if you are paying through insurance)
    • Payment for your first session (based on rates, insurance, etc.)

You should expect for the counselor to explain confidentiality and informed consent and ask you to complete client paperwork either at the appointment or beforehand.

In addition, the counselor will ask background information questions about your life, family, education, medical history, etc. in an effort to get a full picture and get up to speed on what you’re looking to get out of counseling.  Be sure to take care of yourself after the session – drink a fair amount of water, eat a healthy meal, get a good night’s sleep.  Sometimes it may be good to treat yourself a little bit afterwards to a favorite meal or relaxing afterwards.
